Community Outreach

UTA Outreach Mission Statement, Adopted 2006

The UTA outreach team strives to use theatre as an avenue to raise social awareness about various issues, educate, and create a deeper sense of community amongst not only the students and faculty of the University of Wisconsin, but the citizens of Madison as well.

In the last couple of years, we have had some exciting outreach projects, such as our production of Bringing Life to the Death Penalty. This was a series of originally written scenes intended to raise awareness about the presence of the death penalty issue on the November 2006 ballot. The production took place the night before voting and not only had a great turnout but also received attention from numerous local television stations. Also, we have collaborated with the Student Labor Action Coalition to put on a night of art called Art Beats for Heart Beats in celebration of Human Rights Day. Outreach now also holds annual food drives and holiday caroling at a local retirement community.

In the coming year, we hope to build on our already solid foundation. We want to reach out to other parts of the community and use theatre as a tool to educate and get people involved.
With so much going on in our world right now, we believe that theatre can be an effective means of raising awareness, igniting conversation, and working toward social justice.

We always need people to help out with brainstorming, organizing, and performing, so if you're interested or have any questions, please contact Becky Chicoine.

Outreach Coordinator

UTA seeks to build relationships with the greater comunity. Through community outreach, we hope to bring theatre to non-traditional audiences, address pertinent social topics, and work toward a socially just world.
